Superconductivity is one of the oldest and most fascinating problems in solid state physics. In the last ten years, the advancement of numerical ab-initio techniques has permitted to gain a deep insight into the material-dependent properties which characterise real superconductors, and in some cases to anticipate trends in new materials. In my talk, I will review a few recent examples, starting with the classical BCS example of intercalated graphites, and moving on to more controversial cases, such as iron-based superconductors and organic compounds.
