High
pressure studies on molecular crystals
description:
The investigation of structural properties of molecular crystals under
high pressure (up to 30GPa) reveals the role of intermolecular interactions
in the formation of the crystal structure. These interactions are studied
by X-ray diffraction and ab-initio theoretical methods.

Inner part of a diamond high pressure cell. The high pressure is generated by pressing two diamonds against a metallic gasket. High pressures up to 100GPa are generated within the sample chamber.

Colour change
of anthracene (C14H10) as a function of pressure. The colour change results
from a reduction of the electronic band-gap due to applied pressure (M.
Oehzelt, R. Resel, A. Nakayama, K.Shimizu, Tsukuba, March 2001).
