For many modern applications utilizing nanocrystals, performance is determined by the surface and subsurface properties. For many nanosize systems, current understanding of the nature of the surface/subsurface defect states on the one hand and the relationship between the morphology and the defect properties on the other hand is still largely inadequate. In our work, we employ such defect-sensitive techniques as surface photovoltage spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, etc. in tandem with remote plasma processing, polymer surface encapsulation as well as some other surface treatments to investigate surface defect-related properties in various systems with nanoscale surfaces.
