Thin film samples of Metal-Organic Frameworks synthesized from Copper(II) oxide and Isonicotinic acid (INA) were investigated using specular X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction (GIXD) at the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste.
By indexation of the experimental data of one sample, the crystallographic unit cell was determined and compared to the other samples.
In the past, the Patterson Method and the derived Heavy Atom Method were used for structural determination of complex structures containing electron-rich atoms from Single-Crystal Diffraction data.
The use of the Heavy Atom Method for structural determination from diffraction data of thin films is a new approach. Its usability is explored in the case of the CuINA samples and shows promising, preliminary results.
