Effects of ionizing radiation on materials with a focus on electronic components Alicja Michalowska-Forsyth Institute of Electronics https://tugraz.webex.com/tugraz/j.php?MTID=m2790c3d2a9a49c31369978e2a76de31c 11:15 - 12:15 Wednesday 29 May 2024 Many applications operate in ionizing radiation environments, and this is also where one is interested in understanding radiation damage of components. High-energy radiation can break atomic bonds, ionize atoms, or even displace them. The consequences vary with the radiation type and energy. Also, depending on the material and purpose, different properties will be relevant.
This seminar talk will first review the radiation environments, radiation sources and types, and interaction mechanisms. The above will be the foundation for discussing radiation damage and changes in material properties. The change of electrical characteristics will be the central part, as this is one of the research areas at the TU Graz Institute of Electronics. Finally, radiation testing and dosimetry, which are highly relevant for monitoring radiation damage, will be discussed.
