In this talk, the basic mechanisms of the metal/metal and metal/oxide interactions in suspended and supported particles will be first reviewed, including recent advances regarding directionality and many-body effects. The goal is to arrive at simplified theoretical descriptions that allow one to perform accurate simulations on systems of technological interest. In a second part, attention will then shift to more exotic systems, in which the oxidic component is in the form of ultrathin and possibly nanopatterned films. Recent results on the basic mechanisms of metal adsorption and growth on these phases will be discussed, trying to single out possible emerging common trends and general phenomena.
