Advances in ultrashort-pulse technology have made it possible to generate electromagnetic pulses with a duration as short as a few hundred attoseconds approaching the orbital period of a classical atomic electron. This advance holds the promise to map out the electronic dynamics inside atoms and solids in real time. It raises conceptual questions as to the identification of suitable observables and novel information that can be accessed by attosecond pulses. Recent progress and new challenges will be highlighted with the help of a few examples.
