Structural dynamics of molecules in liquids by ultrafast optical and X-ray spectroscopies The study of how electronic changes affect the structural dynamics of molecular systems is at the heart of chemical physics. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy allows to retrieve invaluable information about the dynamics of the system in "real-time". However, it does not provide molecular structure. We have developed over the past few years the methodology for optical pump/X-ray probe experiments based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Combined with ultrafast optical spectroscopies (fluorescence up-conversion and transient absorption), we are capable of mapping the full relaxation kinetics of molecular systems in solution, along with their accompanying structural modifications. We will present the case of the Iron(II)-tris-bipyrdine complex in water, which undergoes a low spin to high spin conversion upon excitation with UV light. |
