A Journey through the Nano-world of Porous Silicon: From Theory to Praxis
Chris Burns
Director of The Porous Silicon Company
16:15 - 17:15 Tuesday 25 October 2022 KFU

Today’s seminar takes a deep dive into the magical world of porous silicon. The journey begins describing multiple ways to manufacture and manipulate Silicon to create high surface area and high porosity substrates, films and particles. By orchestrating the Silicon dopant level, under a certain threshold current, at a particular chemistry concentration, the nanoscopic material morphology becomes an electrochemical playground viable for Mr. Tomkin’s Wonderland. With this powerful control, scientists and engineers are capable of forming silicon for a plethora of applications. Porous silicon is found in sustainable drug delivery carriers, in anodes for lithium ion batteries, in highly efficient direct band gap solar cells, in optical wave guides, as well as high surface area explosives just to name a few. Lets explore the exciting world of porous silicon and open up new doors to venture past and discover the unbound possibilities.
