Understanding the dynamics of molecular collisions and reactions has stimulated research for decades if not centuries. Currently, the quest is to move beyond elementary three-atom systems and unravel the atomic dynamics of reactions that are of relevance to chemistry or astrophysics. A very interesting class of reactions in organic chemistry is the nucleophilic substitition reaction. I will present how the use of ion traps and controlled collision experiments allows us to unravel rich features and new mechanisms for this reaction class. Recently we could extend this to studies of micro-solvated ions and observe the steric influence on the outcome of the reaction.
