| | Micro-CTs are used for investigating small objects with greatly increased resolution compared to clinical CT scanners.
In this study, we want to elucidate how accurate the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) can be determined by measurements on a mCT. In CT, the photoelectric and the Compton effect are the physical basis of absorption; their influence is dependent upon the X-ray energy and on the investigated material. As in CT the used X-rays are generated as Bremsstrahlung, a continuous spectrum of X-ray energies is used, the determination of an energy-dependent LAC is tedious.
Experiments will be performed at the mCT in Petersgasse. The energy dependence of the LAC shall be investigated by varying the tube voltage and the application of filters. If possible, measurements with a photo counting detector will be performed. Substrates of different atomic numbers and densities will be examined. For image reconstruction, various algorithms will be used. For this purpose, the collected data will be processed at a workstation at Inffeldgasse.
