PHY.F20 Molecular and Solid State Physics

Solid state physics is the study of how atoms arrange themselves into solids and what properties these solids have. In this course, students will become familiar with the following topics. Crystal structures: unit cells, Bravais lattice, symmetries, Miller indicies; diffraction of waves from crystals: x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, neutron diffraction, Brillouin zones, structure factor; crystal binding: ionic bonds, covalent bonds, molecular crystals; elastic constants and elastic waves; the quantization of fields; Lattice vibrations and phonons; free electron gas; band structure: Bloch theorem, holes, effective mass, Fermi surface; carrier transport: drift and diffusion, mobility, Seebeck effect, Hall effect.
