Heterogeneous catalysis is explained in detail using industrially important examples. Surface science methods and recent research results are used to show the detailed processes on heterogeneous catalysts. Different reaction mechansims are presented and the experimental methods to identify them are discussed. Transition states and intermediate products on the surface are deduced from recent scientific literature. Especially IR spectroscopy on surfaces is discussed as a means to identify reaction mechansims on surfaces.
