This thesis aims to investigate the effect of an inert atmosphere on the laser-induced pyrolysis of polymer precursors leading to the formation of so called Laser Induced Graphene (LIG), a 3D porous graphene material with high conductivity and large surface area. Starting from previous results obtained in air atmosphere with polyimide precursor, the study focused on setting up a system for operating an IR laser scribing in inert atmosphere. LIG obtained on polyimide in atmosphere at different concentration of oxygen was characterized. A second main goal of the thesis is to investigate LIG synthesis from some thin films of selected biopolymer precursors. Under current investigation is eumelanin and some bio-based polyimide will follow.
